Coleco did not produce intentionally poor arcade ports for the Atari 2600. Anyone who tells you they did has only played Donkey Kong and has based their judgement almost entirely on the infamously gingerbread man-esque appearance of the game's primate antagonist.
Next time someone tries to feed you that tired old urban myth, show them this screen shot. The only thing that has been changed is the Donkey Kong sprite. They will no doubt be blown away by how much more like the arcade game this version is than Coleco's and possibly even exclaim that if this game had been released instead, the Great Video Game Crash would never have happened.

The Atari 2600 port of Donkey Kong is infamous for its gingerbread-man-like titular ape, but that graphical ambiguity isn't unique to Donkey Kong. See if you can match the gorilla sprite on the left with the correct VCS game on the right.
